In a Room is a short interview series where we ask a guest to share some thoughts about their favourite domestic spaces. This week we’re joined by Stephen Ormandy, a Sydney based contemporary artist and the creative director of Dinosaur Designs.
Which room are you in today and why?
My Studio. That’s where I am most days, working. The studio is in the Dinosaur Designs building in Redfern, an industrial building from the late 18th century. Large windows and tall ceilings with excellent light.
What makes this room so special to you?
My Studio is my favourite, for reasons that should be obvious. Music really makes a big difference to it, though. i have always made sure I have good quality speakers, that’s essential. But the studio is my temple.
What for you defines a great room?
That you feel comfortable in, and that your experience satisfies all your senses: sight, feel (as in vibe), touch, smell and sound.
Which room is the most active in your house?
I see my studio as an extension of my home and that’s where I spend most of my awake hours. Then the bedroom where I'm recharging. No interruptions is a luxury.
Which room gets the least amount of use?
Our home is well-designed, so we use the whole place.
Tell us about your all-time favourite room from anywhere or any time.
It’s any room full of art, books, a fabulous stereo, possibly a mirror ball, and decks. Oh, that’s my studio.
