IN A ROOM WITH DANIEL EMMA

In a Room is a conversation series where we ask our friends to share their favourite domestic spaces. For this edition we’re joined by industrial design studio DANIEL EMMA.

Daniel To and Emma Aiston established the design studio DANIEL EMMA in 2008 to express their thoughts through Industrial Design. Their studio works on a large variety of projects, ranging from desk objects to installations. The duo look to create the unexpected from simple objects using simple forms, drawing influence and insight from the diverse culture that Australia presents them with. In their own words, their designs aim to be ‘just nice’. Here they take us through a breezy tour of their personal living and working spaces, and reflect on exactly what makes a room special.

Which room are you in today?

Our home studio. Today is a Thursday and is alway dedicated to fun self driven projects..

Which room is the most active in your house?

The kitchen. It is the heart of our home, smack bang in the middle of everything, so naturally feels like a place you want to gravitate towards.  We do lots of things here. Sometimes work on our laptops from the kitchen table, cook and eat, obviously, and dance lots.

Which room gets the least amount of use?

Probably our spare room, which is ironic as it houses some of our favourite things such as artworks and furniture. It doesn’t not get used per se, it just less a lot less action than other spaces. But is an excellent place to read a book or have a snooze. Maybe we just aren’t dedicating enough time to either of these activities!

Which is your work-from-home room of choice?

Besides our studio, it would be our lounge. It is full of glorious light and has big windows that overlook our back garden, it always feels like a nice space to sit and work from.

What defines a great room?

Natural light, interesting objects, and nice colours.

What is your personal favourite type of room?

A room that blends functionality with aesthetics. It is all well and good to have a room ‘styled' to look a certain way but if it doesn’t have purpose then it is redundant to us.

Tell us about your all-time favourite room.

Nobita’s bedroom in Doreamon. It has a perfect mix of all of the aspects that we feel makes a great room!
